Deer Resistant Purple Coneflower: Looks Pretty, But The Deer Will Stay Away
There are many types of deer resistant plants but some add much more flair to the yard than others. Several plants that repel deer have only plain green flowers and there are only so many varieties of these that can be included in the garden. The deer resistant plant purple coneflower is a much more attractive alternative.
Some gardeners plant purple coneflowers in their gardens without realizing that these plants repel deer. They select them due to their unique and attractive appearance. The purple variety of this plant is not the only type that serves as a deterrent to the four footed creatures. Coneflowers also come in colors like white, russet, red, orange, and burgundy and each of these are deer resistant. One of the most interesting colors is the E. tennesseensis, which has narrow mauve colored petals and a greenish pink center.
The attractive flowers look like daisies with drooping petals and they bloom repeatedly throughout summer. The plants are drought tolerant and very hardy, so they are a standard item in garden centers throughout the United States. Gardeners should expect these plants to grow about two to four feet high and 16 to 18 inches wide. The stems will grow to approximately two to five feet in length. Purple coneflowers grow well in either partial shade or full sun. The best growing conditions are characterized by well drained soil, good air circulation, and constant sun.
Coneflowers look nice when planted with yarrow (another deer resistant plant), ornamental grasses, and butterfly weed. The plant is a perennial, so it should re-bloom in the same location each year. One of the most interesting aspects of this plant is that the flowers are used to make an herbal tea that helps strengthen the immune system. Many may recognize the coneflower by its Latin name, Echinacea.
The deer resistant plant purple coneflower and other colors like white and orange all make a pretty addition to the garden. These plants are showy in appearance but they also cause deer to avoid snacking in the vicinity where they are planted. The flower is used for holistic medicinal purposes, making this truly a multi-purpose plant.
